Yesterday we drove over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The causeway connects New Orleans with Mandeville. The first two lanes were finished in 1956 and the other two lanes were finished in 1969. It is 24 miles long. There are 9500 pilings.
It was difficult to get pictures of approaching New Orleans as the road goes thrump, thrump, thrump, thrump.
We drove around the Ninth Ward area of New Orleans, which happens to be right behind the Pontchartrain Landings RV park that we are staying at, to look at the devastation from Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. We find it surreal to see houses with the markings that we all became so familiar with from watching the news at the time. Hundreds of houses are still just boarded up. Some have been leveled and all throughout the district, the roads are heaved and buckled.
So sad. We are very moved by the spirit of the people of New Orleans now. We have received better service here than we have in most places. The citizens seem very happy. I am sure they all count their blessings.
MORE THAN 1800 LIVES WERE LOST.
We did not do many touristy things in New Orleans. The French Quarter was not really the place for us. We don't drink much and we don't shop much. We do eat of course but home cooked meals are good too.
Tomorrow we move on to Beaumont, Texas. We are meeting up with our friends Janice and Jerry.

Glad you're having a great time. Texas is a much bigger state to travel through than the ones you've recently left behind ... but you know that already. See you soon.
