SHUNPIKING: avoiding the turn pikes, taking the back roads.
After 7 years on the road, we have learned to take the back roads. Much less traffic = much less stress. We would much rather go a little slower and get there relaxed.
What would you rather see? This:
or this:
We plan our route always being aware of alternate routes. We use our trusty Walmart map book (desperately in need of replacement) and Doug makes 3 x 5 cards with instructions. At some point, we may use the GPS on my phone but we only use it when we are near our destination or LOST.
Coming into New Orleans, we chose to come over the Pontchartrain causeway, a 23 mile "bridge" which takes you right into the city. Navigation is much easier when you cut the route in half. The toll was $12.00 but in our opinion, worth the money.

We have stayed at the state park just north of that bridge and taken the causeway in to visit New Orleans... love the drive across the causeway.
Love those backroads.
Love those backroads.
Picture #3 doesn't really like a back Rd. rather like an empty Interstate. Less traffic=more fun.
The Pontchartrain causeway made me very nervous. I don't like to be off solid land that long.
I'd rather have the empty roads like Peter ... wherever they might be.
Love taking that causeway, have driven across it many times to visit the French Quarter, enjoy N'awlins.
