THE DESERTED DESERT

This morning we left Quartzsite and arrived at the LTVA (Long Term Visitors Area) of the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) at Pilot Knob.  Interesting - the Pilot Knob BLM is off Highway 8 to the east of Yuma.  It is actually in California but uses Arizona time.  All very confusing.

We have been here three times before.

January 2011

Today when we arrived we were shocked.  There is no one here.  The place we have been for the last two years was deserted.  Not one rig.

We have no problem with being alone but we are very close to the Mexican border and on one hand that’s good because Border Patrol is around all the time.  However, we will have to leave the rig to go to town and we sure wouldn’t want to leave the rig with no one to watch it.

So we moved -  to the road that runs behind the Pilot Knob Resort.  We found three rigs in the first compound.  We found a lovely spot along the side.  We have a tree, a fire pit and a great view of the mountain.  Far enough away from the Highway too.

            Out the door                                                    Our spot

We’ve got 27 channels of television on our antenna.  Yeah several are Mexican (boy we need to learn Spanish) but we get all the networks.  The aircard has 3 bars and there is a good cellphone signal.

Within a half hour of “landing” , a couple from one of the other rigs came over to introduce themselves.  They are full-timers from Campbell River, BC. Hah!

And soon we were treated to a typical Arizona sunset.

Yes, it's good to have neighbors when you are that close to the border. It's obviously not January yet when you have to go looking for some, though.

Sometimes it is nice not to have neighbors and then there is a situation like yours.
Enjoy the quiet warm beauty of the desert.

Glad you found some friends to park by. Hard to believe it's so empty. Give it a month. It'll fill up.

Smart move on your part! I'm glad you didn't hang out by yourselves! It's still a nice spot and you'll have folks to talk to. Miss you!
